Background

What is a Social Networking System? A Social Networking System's main goal is building an online community for people who share common interests of others to be allowed to communicate and share information with the people that share the same interests. Some large social networks of today include Facebook, Myspace, Hi5, and MYyearbook. People are being connected with other people around the world through these networks which allow them to share information each day with one another. Many people are relying on these networks for much more than the actual social aspect of it as well as spending numerous hours on the sites daily. Of course, these networks are a great way of keeping updated on things that are taking place, but also have negative outcomes for the users. Kayla C.

What are Personal Learning Environments (PLE's)? PLE's are systems that help learners take control of and manage their own learning, which includes providing support in order to: set their own learning goals, manage their learning, and communicate with others in the process of learning which enables them to achieve learning goals. Igoogle, Netvibes, and Pageflakes, all are Personal Learning Environments that are used frequently today. These websites help an individual keep organized, as well as keep the individuals personal interests organized on a personal website. Kayla C.

Security

Social networking sites aren’t loved by everybody as many people feel that the sites grant access to personal information of millions of people at all times. There have already been issues that have been raised from online services that grant strangers access to personal information and many chat rooms and instant messaging services have been criticized as young teens have been targets from sexual predators and many people like Dr peter Haris say that the information posted on the personal pages or people’s profile pages on sites like My space, Facebook and Bebo could eventually end up being available to everybody and that the information can be hard to remove from the pages and that people should think carefully before putting anything about themselves on the social networking sites.

This issue of privacy has been at the centre of further discussion as the email addresses of the users from a social networking site called Quechup were used in a spamming operation.
Issues have also been raised over the potential for misuse on the social networking sites as in 2006 fake Myspace profile created in the name of Josh Evans by Lori Janine Drew led to the suicide of Megan Meier. This raised questions over bullying across these sites

Current News

This is a story about the News Feed on Facebook, [1] (Patrick H)

  • Recently, a Florida boy of the age of 19 commits suicide by an overdose. He records himself and posts it live on webcam to allow others to watch him. Many people had been drawn to this, not realizing that it was actually taking place. In the end, the young boy dies of an overdose of antidepressants and other drugs. Basically, the kid uses some sort of social network online in order to succeed in suicide. Kayla C.

Areas of Impact

Education

Analyze this topic's impact on education. Consider including three subcategories: 1) Elementary School, 2) Middle/ High School, and 3) College Education. Include a brief up to 300 word summary/ abstract on this page. Include one or more relevant images.

Education is something that we all as a students recieve in school from 8:00 to 3:30(apply it to your school time). But we spend all day in classes that teach a certain subject such as Chemistry or biology. Now I am not saying this is bad, what I am trying to say is Social networking helps students, teachers, professionals, or even parents to communicate not only from their surrounding areas but to communicate, share ideas, and opinions from another city, state, or a distant country wherever they wish. One way to learn new ideas can be from a popular social networking site such as myspace, or facebook. What can you learn? If an individual knows nothing about the French culture, and is eager to learn about it, they can simply send a friend request, and simply ask questions. One of the better social networking web site might be Ning it self, to communicate, work with different people around to globe as one. What can be more benefical to education than to learn from others such as your self around the globe.

An elementary school is an institution where children receive the first stage of compulsory education known as elementary or primary education.
In the UK, schools providing primary education are now known as primary schools. They generally cater for children aged from four to eleven (Reception to Year Six or in Northern Ireland P1 to P7). Primary schools are often subdivided into infant schools for children from four to seven and junior schools for ages seven to 11.
In the United States, elementary schools offer education between the kindergarten level and, typically, a grade between 5th and 8th. Elementary schools in the United States are also commonly called "grade schools".
In India elementary schools provide education from Class 1 to Class 5.

Evidence from studies conducted in classrooms suggests that popular and unpopular children form their own unique subsystems and that their interactions with peers differ in quality. The present study assessed the behaviors and peer networks of popular, average, and rejected children in a larger and more diverse social setting. Based on sociometric measures administered in each classroom at 2 elementary schools, 48 3rd and 4th graders were selected to represent each sociometric membership group and then observed during mixed-grade recess periods. Analysis of children's behaviors indicated that rejected students spend less time in prosocial interactions and more time in agonistic and unoccupied behaviors than did popular or average students and paralleled average students in time spent watching others play. Analyses' of various network measures revealed that a larger proportion of rejected students' interactions, as compared to those of popular and average students, was conducted in small groups and distributed among younger and/or unpopular companions. Popular and average students were also named as friends by a greater proportion of their frequent playground companions; they also tended to have networks that were more cliquish or comprised of mutual friends.

Government and Politics,Employment

-Government and Politics-

Campaigning in the United States is a grueling process for the Democratic and Republican candidates. To help persuade there voters many candidates use social networks.Congress uses the internet to communicate with the public about current issues and bills passed.
These Congressional Web sites provide information about legislators, committees, and hearings. These sites also provide information on proposed legislation.[1]

Australian electoral campaigns have recently (2007 election) branched out into sites like Myspace to appeal to the younger voters. John Howard's Myspace has pictures and blogs, with a simple list of his government's beliefs and future changes. His opposition Kevin Rudd also has a myspace, very similar to Howard's. (Lauren 22/10)

Politics now days are informed by News Papers, magazines, TV shows, and internet site such as Glide America which is a form of social networking site such as GCN (Government Computer News). Glide America promotes citizens to be active in their government by being informed about the government’s activity in foreign nation or any other domestic issues. The citizens may also keep up with which bills in congress are being debated over and can see which congressmen voted for or against the bill. Glide America enables the citizens and its Representatives to communicate timely.
Through Social networking the citizens not only get the benefits of communicating with its government but also the employment for jobs from websites like www.houstonjobs.com. This website helps an everyday person to look up jobs that matches their experience or what they are interested in.

Major political parties use social networking sites like facebook to attract voters

-Employment-

One social network businesses are turning to is Facebook.People are in search to learn about a potential employee position that is available. Many times, these sites are taken advantage of and people post blogs, pictures, and say vulgar things which can result in being turned down for a job, or not making it into a certain college because of things included on his/her private account. Ask yourself, Is your account really private? Nowadays anybody can hack into people's account and profile to learn all there is to know about a single person without consent of doing so. Of course this may not seem ethical but it is a way one can discover something about another. Is this safe? Kayla C.

Arts, Entertainment and Leisure

The most popular social netwoking sites for leisure are Facebook and Myspace. In April 2008, Facebook overtook Myspace as the most popular social networking site. Youtube is popular for both uploading and viewing videos at home and can be created by anybody. Online Social networks can also be used for travel, meeting people, music, hobbies etc. Forums allow people to find cheap air fares, accommodation and get general travel advice, tips and contacts. Leisurely use of social networking sites can have both good and bad results. We can see this when Corey Delaney threw his party. He sent invitations via Myspace and as a result the party spiralled out of control.
